In kindergarten, children develop critical learning habits and the basics of literacy and math. They also develop social skills like clear communication and understanding others’ feelings. Success Academy believes a great kindergarten charter school experience sets children up for a lifetime of learning success.
Success Academy offers something different from traditional school districts and private schools. We use an evidence-based approach to education and nurture your child’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Clear behavioral expectations reduce distractions and minimize time spent on routine tasks. This leaves more time and space for experiential, hands-on learning.
Math and literacy are staples of the kindergarten curriculum. But they’re not the only things students learn in our classrooms. Physical education and sports like Success Academy Soccer get children up and active while honing their mental and physical acuity. Success Academy students can also engage in performing arts that culminate in on-stage experiences showcasing their talent.
Applying for enrollment is simple, free and convenient. We do not require specific test scores or academic progress for admission.
To apply for admission, fill out an application and choose up to 10 potential locations to attend. Once you confirm your ranked choices and complete the application, your student will enter the lottery.
Charter schools differ from traditional local school districts in several ways. Charter schools have greater flexibility and autonomy than traditional schools, but they must often meet higher standards as a result. They may offer innovative teaching methods, learning environments, and curricula that traditional schools may not.
A charter school kindergarten curriculum depends on the school’s educational philosophy, goals, and population’s needs. Charter schools have the freedom to adopt and implement curricula they think will best meet those needs. Project-based learning, language immersion, or STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs are all popular learning models.
Charter schools do not have specific or selective admissions requirements. They’re free and open to all children, regardless of academic skill or needs. If more students apply than there are spaces available, charter schools must hold lotteries to randomly select students. Some schools may add preferences to the lottery, however, including for siblings of current students or English language learners.
Charter schools like Success Academy offer a robust range of cocurriculars for students to try. Music, soccer, theater, chess, and fine arts are all options for charter school students. The availability of specific programs can vary based on available resources and the charter school’s individual philosophy.
Parent involvement is almost always welcome in charter schools. Success Academy is no exception. Opportunities for involvement can include attending arts and athletics events, visiting the school to see our classrooms in action, and joining growth celebrations throughout the year. Many charter schools actively depend on parent involvement to enhance their child’s educational environment and build a strong school community. However, at Success Academy, we pride ourselves on the fact that families are not required to fundraise at any point, because we provide all supplies at no cost.

Nearly 20 years ago, we launched a revolution in schooling. We promised students, families, and educators that there is a better way – that they didn’t have to settle for failing district schools. Today, Success is one of the nation’s highest-achieving school districts, educating 22,000 K-12 scholars across 57 schools in New York City. Ninety-five percent of our scholars are children of color and three-quarters live at or below the poverty line, but they consistently outperform their affluent suburban peers across the wide range of external exams from New York State tests to APs and SATs. All our scholars – 100% – have been admitted to 4-year colleges, most of them with the financial aid that makes higher education possible for their families.
After two decades, we have demonstrated that we can reverse, not just close, the achievement gap. Our alumni are proof that exceptional outcomes are possible for all children, and that great schooling can be achieved at scale. As they graduate from college, they are paving the way for those who follow, serving as campus leaders, earning advanced degrees, and launching careers in STEM, finance, and education, among many other fields. We could not be more proud of them and all that they stand for.
We remain steadfast in our belief that every kid deserves a great public school. And we are more ambitious than ever, expanding as quickly as we can to serve more kids and more families.
