Success Academy

Mission

History

  • The first Success Academy opens its doors in Harlem serving 165 Kindergarten and 1st grade scholars.

  • Success Academy Harlem 1 welcomes a new incoming class of Kindergarten scholars and adds 2nd grade.

  • After seeing dramatic gains in student achievement in our first school and in response to high parent demand, we open three new elementary schools (Success Academy Harlem 2, 3 and 4). More than 1,000 scholars are enrolled in a Success Academy school with more than 100 teachers and school staff.

  • Enrollment grows! We now serve 1,500 scholars in Kindergarten through 4th grade. Our first school, Success Academy Harlem 1, ranks in the top 1% of New York State public schools with 97% of scholars passing the state exams.

  • We open three additional elementary schools across Harlem and the Bronx as well as one middle school in Harlem. We are serving nearly 2,500 scholars.

  • We launch Teaching Fellows, an innovative summer training program for new teachers. Our network of schools expands into two new neighborhoods with the opening of Success Academy Bed-Stuy 1 and Success Academy Upper West. During the 2011-2012 school year, we have approximately 3,500 scholars enrolled in our schools and over 400 teaching and support staff serving our scholars.

  • We establish Leader Fellows, a cutting-edge program preparing leaders working outside of education to become exceptional school leaders. Additions of Success Academy Cobble Hill, Williamsburg and Bed-Stuy 2 bring us to 12 elementary schools, and the opening of two new middle schools, Harlem West and Harlem Central, brings us to a total of 14 schools across New York City. We serve 4,600 scholars in grades K-7.

  • We open six new elementary schools, Success Academy Hell's Kitchen, Crown Heights, Fort Greene, Union Square, Prospect Heights, and Bronx 3, as well as two new middle schools, Success Academy Harlem North Central and Harlem East. During the 2013-2014 school year, we are serving 6,700 scholars at 22 schools!

Values

Success Starts With…

HAVING AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH

As a network of charter schools, we have the freedom to be innovative and creative in our instructional approach. Like your zoned school, charter schools are free public schools open to all students, but charter schools are given more autonomy than zoned public schools in exchange for greater accountability. At Success Academy, we embrace the opportunity to do things differently in order to provide an exceptional education for your child.

EVERY CHILD GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE

We prepare scholars to graduate from highly selective colleges, and college is a hallmark of our school culture. We refer to our classrooms by the teacher’s alma mater and the year the scholars will graduate from college. Scholars will forever be a member of the class of 2025, 2026, and so on.

IN GOING BEYOND Z

In the timeless children’s book, On Beyond Zebra, Dr. Seuss urges readers to constantly find new limits – to discover and achieve more than they had previously thought possible. The story explores what letters might exist beyond the letter “Z.”

We ask our scholars and our entire community to go “Beyond Z” every day – to always work harder, think more creatively, and never stop questioning.
